Sheldon Square

SheldonPrivate Charles W. Sheldon, a native of 22 Elm Street, served in the US Army during World War I. He was born on August 19th, 1888. Private Sheldon initially enlisted on May 30th, 1918 to 2nd Regiment, 1st Brigade, Field Artillery Replacement Draft. He was later transferred to Battery C, 4th Battalion of Camp Jackson, South Carolina, and on July 13th, 1918 to Company A, 3rd Corp Artillery Park. He arrived overseas on August 28th, 1918.

Tragically, he died of disease in Angouleme, France on September 27th, 1918. He was the son of Charles and Rosina (Wentworth) Sheldon and brother to Arthur, Phillip Woodbury, and Grace of Salem. He was also the grandson of Charles Wentworth and great-grandson of Colonel Jesse Sheldon, both Civil War veterans.

His square is located at the corner of Federal and North Streets, dedicated in his honor.
