TullyPrivate George H. Tully, a native of 48 Prospect Street, served in the Massachusetts National Guard during World War I. He was born on May 22nd, 1899 in Salem. Prior to his military service, he worked as a leather worker. Private Tully initially enlisted on June 24, 1916 to Company H, 8th Infantry, Massachusetts National Guard, where he served on the Mexican Border. He officially reported for duty on July 23th, 1917 and mustered on August 1st, 1917. He later transferred to Company H, 2nd Infantry, Massachusetts National Guard (Company H, 104th Infantry, 26th Division). He arrived overseas on October 5th, 1917.

Tragically, he died on April 14th, 1918 from shell wounds sustained in Bois Brule, France. He was the first Salem citizen to lose his life in World War I. He was the son of Patrick and Norah (Flanagan) Tully and brother to Patrick Frank, James, Martin, and Margaret.

His square is located at the corner of Boston and Essex Streets, dedicated in his honor.
