Private Speros A. Vasilakopoulos served in the US Army during World War I. He was born around 1891 in Greece. Prior to his service, he worked as a leather worker and was a resident of Massachusetts for 5 years. Private Vasilakopoulos initially enlisted on April 30th, 1918 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He was assigned to Company M, 113th Infantry, 29th Division and arrived Overseas on June 15th, 1918.

Tragically, he died of wounds sustained in action during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive (France) on October 11th, 1918. He was the son of Mrs. Katheryn Vasilakopoulos and brother to Peter, George, John, and Arthur of Salem, and Mrs. Katheryn Gineie.

His square is located at the corner of Margin and Endicott Streets, dedicated in his honor.
