Radon Information

January is Radon Action Month

Radon Action Month is a public health event for increasing awareness of radon and promote radon testing and mitigation. This is an important event because about one out of three Americans will develop cancer during their lifetime, with Radon being the 2nd leading cause of Lung Cancer behind smoking.

What is Radon?

Radon is cancer-causing radioactive gas that comes from the ground. It can move up through your home’s foundation and get trapped inside. The US EPA and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Indoor Air Quality Program recommend all homes be tested for radon.

Why Test?

  • Nearly 1 of every 15 homes in the U.S. is estimated to have elevated radon levels that exceed the EPA action guideline of 4 pCi/L.
  • Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in people who never smoke, and the second leading cause of lung cancer overall.
  • The US EPA estimates that 21,000 radon-related deaths occur annually in the United States.
  • Testing the air in your home is the only way to know if your home has elevated radon levels. For Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health is offering free radon test kits (while supplies last).
