Salem Awards Community Beautification Efforts

The City Revives Competition to Showcase Window Box and Traffic Island Improvements

Mayor Dominick Pangallo, the City of Salem Beautification Committee, Salem Garden Club, and the City of Salem celebrated the revival of the Salem Window Box Competition at a reception and awards ceremony hosted at the Women’s Friend Society Garden on Hawthorne Boulevard. In the 2023 Competition there were three categories to be judged, Residential Window Boxes, Business Window Boxes, and Traffic Islands. Many of the groups cultivated and composed their best showcase for everyone to enjoy in the community.

After rounds of judging, The Salem Garden Club awarded the following properties:

Residential Window Box:

First Place – Valerie Fox, 4 Chestnut Street
Second Place – Karen Davis, 18 Winter Street
Third Place – Micah Hapworth, 6 Brown Street
Honorable Mention – Vivian Hudson, 7 Derby Square
 

Business Window Box:

First Place – Coon’s Card and Gift Shop, 226 Essex Street
Second Place – Adriatic, 155 Washington Street
Third Place – Northey Street Bed and Breakfast, 30 Northey Street
Honorable Mention – Black Cat Curiosity Shoppe, 234 Washington Street
 

Traffic Island:

First Place – Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel
Second Place – St. Jean’s Credit Union
Third Place – The Feline Hospital of Salem
Honorable Mention – SAFE – Salem Alliance for the Environment
 

Winners received gifts generously donated by The Home Depot, Salem Native Nursery, Maitland Farm, and Oak and Moss. The Salem Beautification Committee and Salem Garden Club thank those who participated and those who generously made donations.

“I am honored to recognize those who give so much time, effort, and talent to helping our community shine,” said Mayor Pangallo, “We’re fortunate that so many in Salem are willing to volunteer to make our city a vibrant and welcoming place.”

The mission of the Salem Beautification Committee is to assist the City in developing and pursuing initiatives that promote the beautification of the City. The goal of the Committee is to create civic pride and to motivate the City’s diverse population to participate in the beautification process. The Committee will identify areas in need of improvement, will create programs, recruit volunteers and will secure the funding resources to achieve its goals.
