BuffordPrivate Oliver J. Bufford served in the Massachusetts National Guard during World War I. He was born on May 2nd, 1894 in Milford, New Hampshire. Prior to enlisting, he worked as a leather worker. Private Bufford  initially enlisted on June 1st, 1917. He officially reported for duty July 25th, 1917 and mustered on August 4th, 1917 to Battery D, 1st Field Artillery, Massachusetts National Guard (Battery D, 101st Field Artillery, 26th Division).

Tragically, he died from an accident in Chemin-des-Dames, France on March 15th, 1918. He was the son of Ovilas and Mary Louise, and brother to Clarida, Alice, Laura, Anna, Alfred, Henry, and Napoleon of Salem. He was baptized as Ovila Albany Bufford.

His square is located at the corner of Loring Avenue and Lafayette Street, dedicated in his honor.
