Members Present: Elizabeth McGovern, Lynne Mullen, Cynthia Nina-Soto, Gabriel Yeager, Timothy Norton

Staff Present: Lisa Peterson

  1. Call to Order: 6:35 p.m.
  2. Approval of January 8, 2024 minutes: Minutes approved 5-0-0.
  3. Financial Updates:

  1. Old Business:
  • Education Fund Applications discussed
    • Dr. Zrike put it out in his newsletter, and direct outreach to teachers
  • Promotional ideas discussed
    • Chris O’Donnell – Salem Public School Director of Communications
    • Sarah Roy – City of Salem Director of the Salem Children's Alliance
    • Book Buddy Program
  • ESL Classes could be funded; House of the Seven Gables?
  • Lynne will make some graphics to be shared over social media
    • Gabriel will help
    • Will bring to the next meeting
  • Letter to the Editor (Liz)
    • Liz and Tim will work on it
      • Will accept any edits and then work on it together
      • Cynthia and Lynne gave feedback on the letter
      • Cynthia – moves to pre-approve a letter to the editor once Liz & Tim feel it is ready and signed by Gabriel as Chair.  Tim seconded. Approved 5-0-0.
  • Rubric – Gabriel will finish and send to Lisa to send out to the Committee.

    • Update Date & Time stamp at top and bottom (Friday, May 10, 2024, 11:59pm)
    • Special meeting for the Committee planned for May 20, 2024 6:30pm
    • Award the Scholarship and reach out to the contact at the school as well 
    • Lynne, moved; Cynthia seconded, passes 5-0-0.
  1. New Business
  • Tim: Can we waive the reading of the “special acts”? (Answer: no)
  • Tim: How many do we award each year? (Answer: it varies from year to year and is at the discretion of the Committee)
  • Tim: How have we done fundraising in the past?  Idea: “Pencil Drive” to raise money
  • Liz: Letter to Cannabis shops?
  • Yamilis Cruz (potential new member): Introduced herself.
